How to travel cheap and make money while traveling is probably one question every traveller always seek an answer for, do you agree? In this article I will tell you my top 21 travel tips and ways to make money while travelling, which I tried for myself and I know they work for everyone.

By the way, did you know that 8-9 out of every ten students and working class people love to travel but only 3-4 people travel domestically and 1-2 actually go for international trips? Do you know the main reason why people don’t travel?

Their Parents! They don’t allow their kids to travel… Just kidding!
According to you, what could be the reason?

The ultimate truth is they ‘think’ they don’t have enough money to travel. Time is another constraint but that can be easily managed if you plan your trip well in advance.

By the way dude, even money can be managed if you take a loan from a bank and don’t return?. But we want to go the ethical way and should not be making money this way, right?

So, Mangesh, then tell me how to travel around the world for less. I am a student/not making money /working on minimum wages, but there is a traveller hiding inside my heart?

Hmmm, then here are some travel tips which you can use for traveling, find cheap flights, hostel and EAT FOR FREE and even make money while travelling.

So, get a cup of coffee/tea and read on.

First things first, plan your trip in advance…really well in advance. That’s the key. Planning your trip six months in advance can save up to 60% of your travel cost. Plan your study/work commitments so that you get enough holidays. Also, decide which places you want to go and visit. For that, read this travel guide.

Tip 1: Keep travel your first priority!

Correction, if you are married, keep your wife as your first priority or you won’t dare to travel again, trust me!

But on a serious note, keep travel your first priority while planning your expenses or you will never have enough money to travel. Refrain from expensive dinner, parties, electronic gadgets as expensive food and drinks anyways would get flushed away the next day and big gadget brands would anyways launch new versions six months down the line. Just by refraining one cup of a coffee a day for six months can fetch you approximately £500, pretty cool right?

The best way to fly free is to fling yourself over the aeroplane tyre and travel the world. But you may have to learn Wim Hof’s techniques to keep yourself warm in -60 degrees. Oh! Don’t kill yourself, please keep reading.

Tip 2 Ok, if not fly free, you can try flying cheap. Travel credit card is the answer. Sign up for Travel Credit card and airline cards and jointly you can get thousands of points free and can collect miles. You can check moneysupermarket.com to apply for the same.  There are always number of promotions going on where you can earn free points. You can shop from their affiliated shops and get more points.

Tip 3 Fly on Tuesdays – There are many websites like skyscanner.com, which give better rates and where you can compare fares for the whole month. Try all permutation and combinations to get cheap flight tickets. Generally, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days where you get better deals. So keep an eye!

Tip 4 – Apply coupon codes -There are many websites like promocodes.com for airlines which give you coupon codes to be applied on flight bookings. Try applying them before you push ‘Book’ button. I have saved many pounds using their codes in past on domestic and international travel.

Tip 5 – Check all top booking sites: Many a times you get better deals on various flight booking sites. Before pulling the card from your wallet, try searching for your destination on top booking sites. Recently I was planning a trip to India and I searched the tickets on skyscanner.com and then did a quick search on makemytrip.com. I got the same flight approx. £45 cheaper on skyscanner.com. Why not save some cash just by putting 10 mins extra on your flight search?

Invest in good bag/suitcase as per the size mentioned on their website. Also, remember to get the boarding pass online before your travel date. Getting the pass from airport could make you £50 poorer.

How to travel cheap

Stay cheap… I mean inexpensive

Ok, now you know how to travel cheap, now lets focus on your stay.

Tip 7 Low cost stay in BnBs: I did mention before, keep your focus on travel and not on stay. Hotels these days could be costly, so why not stay in low cost BnB? I have stayed in many BnBs and many a times I found the stay more comfortable and location much better than hotels. You can cook your own food and get better service from the owner. Check airbnb.com for BnB deals.

Some amazing bed and breakfast and hostel booking sites are:

Tip 8 Share and care -You can try staying in hostels or sharing accommodation. It won’t just save your money; you may also meet awesome people there with similar mentality. Many a times calling directly to the BnB/hostels could get you better rates as they don’t have to pay BnBs and other such hosting websites a cut.

Tip 9 – Religious accommodation – Depending on where you are going, search for religious accommodation where you can stay for less. Search for monasterystays.com, goodnightandgodbless.com or similar accommodations in the city you are travelling.

Tip 10 – *Wanna stay free?  Just google couchsurfing, where you can stay as a guest with locals, free of cost. But obviously don’t expect big, sometimes you get a room, sometimes a bed and sometimes a couch. But remember, you still want to travel cheap, right?

Tip 11 Just try searching for house sitting opportunities in the city you are visiting. You can watch their house when owners themselves are out for travel. Check out  HeckticTravels.comnomador.com for house-sitting opportunities. House owners get peace of mind; you get a place to straighten your back, win-win!

Tip 12 Take a night slow train – For intercity transport, if your next destination is 6-7 hours away, take a night sleeper coach train where you can save on your travel time and cost of one night hotel stay. When I was going to Naples from Venice, I took a sleeper coach train and ended up saving £50 on stay (Venice being one of the costliest cities to stay in) and 6 hours of travel time.

In Life there are no free lunches… But yes, there are!

Now I think you understood the tricks on how to travel cheap and stay for less, what about food?

Tip 13 If you want to avoid upset stomach, tension when the waiter brings you the bill and stands smiling near your table for a tip and the embarrassment when you don’t give him a one…cook yourself. By staying in accommodations which allow you to cook, you could save hundreds on stay and food. Spend £40 for a week’s grocery, try your awesome cooking skills and stay healthy. Don’t know how to cook, give Lean in 15’ a try.

Tip 14 If you are travelling with kids, there are many restaurants where kids eat free. Check out kidspass.co.uk, familybreakfinder.co.uk and book your table in advance.

Tip 15 *Free lunch tip – Try searching if the city has Indian Gurudwara where the big hearted Punjabis would feed you for free and that too with a big smile on their faces. They call it ‘Langar’. It’s free and tastes f**** awesome. What else you need, man?

How to travel cheap locally… not a big deal

Tip 16 Only mantra for good deals on travel is to plan beforehand…much before. I was planning a trip from Edinburgh to London and I got a deal on bus travel just for £1 on megabus.com. Can you believe, just for £1?  You also get huge discount on train passes if you plan well.

When in Europe, I normally use goeuro.com which gives good deals on bus, train and flight tickets on the same page. So you can decide on which means to take, depending on how much time and money you have in hand.
